Cheshire Cat smile on a chest

Chest · Mixed · Photo

A small Cheshire Cat tattoo shows a wide grin in black linework with two blue eyes, sitting on the upper chest below the collarbone. The left panel is in ordinary light, while the right panel is under ultraviolet light, where a larger cat outline with a striped body glows bright teal and blue. The composition is a side-by-side pair of close crops with the person's face out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit down, the lamps are lit and the bride has stopped pretending she isn't listening. You want the story of Mags Penhallow's cat, and I'll tell it the way my gran told it to me, standing on this same flagstone with a cider she never once finished.

The cat arrived the winter the river froze. Nobody owned it. It sat on the dairy wall and grinned at the milk churns until Mags put out a saucer, and the grin stayed on long after the rest of it had gone. By day you saw only the eyes, two blue lamps in the hedge, and that smile hanging over the gate like a thing somebody had forgotten to take down.

The bridegroom's grandfather didn't believe in anything without a receipt. One night he took a storm lantern to the byre to prove there was no cat, and he came back with his hair gone white at the temples. 'It runs the length of the rafters,' he said, 'stripes all down it, every one lit like a seam of ice.' Mags only nodded. 'The smile is all you catch in daylight,' she told him. 'The rest of him keeps for the dark.'

So when you dance tonight, mind the corners of the barn. If a grin turns up at the edge of the lantern light, don't go looking for the rest of him. Lift your glass to it, and it will slip off to bother somebody else's wedding.
