Black typewriter-style lettering reading choose joy on the inner wrist of a raised hand, set against dark weathered wooden boards.

Choose joy wrist tattoo

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand shows the words choose joy in black typewriter-style lettering on the inner wrist. Two other wrists and hands rest on either side against dark, weathered wooden boards, and faint thin lines of fine marks run across the wrists. The ink is solid black and the photograph is lit evenly from above, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Dear Lorraine,

I found the reunion invitation under the Olivetti last Tuesday, when I was clearing the bureau for the hall fund. Mr Pardoe's old typewriter still has a sheet rolled in it, the words CHOOSE JOY typed one above the other across the top, the letters worn so thin the paper has nearly gone through. You remember him going on about the ribbon being the only honest thing in Room 14.

Typing class, 1987, smelling of Tippex and warm radiators. He'd make us type the same line until our fingers ached, and he'd rap the desk when we went slack. Choose joy, he'd say, it's a skill like any other, you keep your hands on the home row and you keep going. We all thought he was barmy. Then Gary Foote's dad walked out, and Gary typed that line forty times in a row on a Friday afternoon, and nobody laughed.

The reunion is at the Working Men's Club on the 14th. I've said I'll come if you do. Bring the photo from the sports hall, the one where we're all squinting into the sun and pretending we don't care who's holding the camera.

Pardoe died in March. Tucked under the platen was a scrap of card in his handwriting that just said, Keep the ribbon fresh. So I'm typing my reply on that machine before I post it, so you'll know it came from me and not from a form. See you on the 14th.
