The glass on Ishbel Mackay's windowsill was no bigger than a saucer, and nobody on Hallsey was allowed to lift it. Her grandmother had carried it across from the mainland in a fishing boat, wrapped in oilskin, and said only that there was a lake inside, still as a plate, with a tall pine on the shore and mountains standing behind it like patient men.

Ishbel's nephew Donald dared himself one wet afternoon when the adults were at the peat stack. He lifted the glass with both hands. Through it he saw the water lying flat, the dark trees crowding its edges, and the sky above paler than milk. Nothing moved. The far shore had no smoke, no boat, no path. He set the glass down so quickly that it rang on the stone, and his palms smelt of salt for a week.

When the winter gales came and the boats stayed in the harbour, Ishbel sat with the glass in her lap and turned it slowly until the pine stood at the edge of the light. On the shingle beneath it lay a rowing boat with its oars laid neatly across the thwarts, and a pair of wet boots set side by side, as if someone had stepped out and meant to come back for them.

She carried the glass down to the shore at low tide and set it facing the sea. By morning the wind had dropped, and the sail of the Morag came round the point, slow and whole, with three men aboard who waved as though they had only been away the one night.
