Fine line city skyline on ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line outline tattoo of a city skyline runs across the side of the ribs. It includes tall towers, a large Ferris wheel, a palm tree and a small heart outline at the right end. The thin, even black linework sits on smooth skin against a plain, softly lit grey background.

Dear Tomasz,

The wheel on the Quay turned for the last time on Sunday, and I was the one who had to stop it. Mr Abernethy from the council stood at the bottom with his clipboard while I pulled the brake lever my father fitted in 1979. The whole thing groaned like an old cow before the cars came to rest at the top. Nobody got off. There was nobody left to get off. Forty-one years of bolts and grease, and I still have oil under my nails.

You'd hardly know the skyline now. Half of it is scaffold. The Harbour Tower lost its spire in the February gales, and they've hung a tarpaulin where the flags used to be, so it looks like something caught in the rain that has given up. The palm by the bandstand died in March. I told Mrs Okafor it was the salt, but really it was just tired, like the rest of us.

Yesterday I climbed the ladder to the old sign on the ticket office roof, the one that reads CALDER BAY in letters taller than me, and found something scratched into the lower rail. A small heart, no bigger than a thumbnail, with two initials inside. Ours, I think, though I couldn't say which summer. I sat up there for an hour and watched the gulls work the bins below.

I won't sell the wheel for scrap. I've written to the council to say so, and I've told them they can come and pull the lever themselves. Come home for the summer if you can. We'll take one last ride together, slowly, and you can tell me what the city looks like from the top.

Love, Dad
