Cloud with moustache tattoo
Black and grey · Photo
A cartoon cloud drawn in a single bold black outline, with two small dots for eyes and a curled moustache sitting across the middle. The interior is left as bare skin, so the design relies on line alone with no shading or fill. The image is tightly cropped, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a plain skin background.

Mrs Pell had never once let a cloud pass over the Thames at Hampton without a word of complaint, and she said so loudly enough that the lock-keeper's dog barked back. The Dorothy Anne was moored three barges deep below Teddington, her coal cabin smelling of onions and wet rope, and Mrs Pell was stirring a pan of scouse with the handle of a boat hook because the spoon had gone walkabout. Above us the sky had gone the grey of old porridge, and a single cloud sat there looking pleased with itself, round as a bread roll, with two dots for eyes and a moustache like a Victorian bailiff's.

My brother Cyril swore that cloud had followed us from Oxford. He claimed it had been dropping onto the towpath at night and turning up at the next lock as if it owned the place. Mrs Pell said that was nonsense and that clouds had no business with moustaches, which was a fine thing to say from a woman who had waxed her own for forty years. The cloud, so far as anyone could tell, took no notice of either of them and drifted towards the weir with the air of a man who had paid for his ticket.
The rain came on at four, as it always does on a Thursday, and the cloud came down with it, a soft grey sheet that hid the far bank and pooled on the cabin roof. We huddled in the hatch and waited for the sky to clear. When it did, the cloud was gone, and in its place, lying flat on the wet tarpaulin in the last of the light, was a single curled hair, long and black and very much like a moustache. Mrs Pell picked it up, looked at it for a long while, and tucked it behind her ear.
