Old Tam Greaves kept a grey-muzzled bitch called Nell who would not come in from the edge of Hollin Wood until the bell at St Mary's had rung three times. The village said the wood took any dog that wandered far enough, and Nell was the only one it had ever given back.

One November the miller's girl went missing among the beeches. The men went in with lanterns and came out at dawn with nothing but their own cold breath. Tam sat on the step with his boots laced and did not go. Nell pressed her pale eye against his knee, then slipped through the gap in the hawthorn hedge, low and grey, without once looking back.

She came out of the bracken at noon the next day with the girl's red ribbon knotted in her collar. Behind her, stepping slowly through the frost, came the girl herself, muddy to the knee and hungry but whole. Nell lay down on the threshold and would not get up. Tam carried her in, and her ears had gone white at the tips where the cold had found them. The miller's wife swore she had heard the dog bark twice in the wood, once for the girl and once for the village.

They buried Nell under the cherry tree by the mill. When the village rebuilt the lintel of the chapel that winter, the mason carved a dog's head above the door, her ears turned towards the wood, so any child walking home at dusk would know which way was safe.
