Coffee cup and laurel sprigs on the chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line drawing of a steaming coffee cup on a saucer sits centrally, with a small laurel sprig on each side. Below it, a short handwritten phrase about delicious coffee runs in black lettering, with a thin underline beneath the last words. The tattoo is black ink only, shown in a close crop of the upper chest above a plaid shirt.

She met me at the door with a cup already in her hand, steam curling off it as if it was showing off. "Taste that," she said. "Go on. Tell me it's not the best thing you've had all week."
It was, and I told her so. She took the empty cup back and turned it upside down on its saucer, the way she did when she wanted you to know a thing was settled. Then she pulled a biro from behind her ear and wrote something on the paper napkin under the sugar bowl, something about the coffee and how much she loved it, and underlined the last words twice so hard the pen tore the paper.
The coach drivers got their hot chocolate. The napkin got folded into my glovebox, where it still is. Every January, when the pass shuts, I open it at the first bend, and I can hear the urn ticking behind her voice.
