Colourful tattoos on raised legs and forearms

Calf · Colour · Photo

Two bare legs are raised towards the top of the frame, each wearing a pale, cage-style strappy sandal, while two hands hold the calves. The calves carry colourful tattoos in pink, purple, green and yellow, with painted-looking shading and detail that is partly obscured by the hands and sandal straps. The forearms at the bottom of the frame also carry tattoos, and the blurred skyline behind gives the image a soft grey backdrop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Teodor had cut thirty-two hexagons into the upper before Ruth came down from the flat to say the order was off. The client wanted something for a rooftop, not a birdcage, and he could keep his paint pots for his own nonsense. He kept them. That night he painted the inside of every hexagon a different colour: rose, plum, a green like pond weed, and a yellow that would not dry before morning.

The paint made the leather stiff, so he left the straps loose and carried the pair up the fire stairs to test them in the wind. Below him the city ran grey into the haze, the towers thinning like pencil marks rubbed with a thumb. A woman he had never met stood at the parapet with her own shoes in one hand. She laughed when she saw the cage hanging from his fingers and asked whether they would walk on water. He said they would walk on tiles, which was true, and she said tiles would do.

She laced them on right there, sitting on an upturned crate, and the colours came through the holes and lay on the concrete in small coloured coins. Teodor watched the light move as she shifted her weight. She did not buy the pair that afternoon, she bought it the following week, and she sent him a card with no name on it, only a drawing of a hive with one cell left open at the top. He pinned it above the bench beside the yellow pot, where it stayed long after the paint had dried.
