Corgi in a headband inside a triangle pattern

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon corgi sits upright with its tongue out, wearing a gold headband and a red collar with a round gold tag. It sits in front of a large black-outlined triangle filled with smaller teal, purple and pink triangles. The bold outlines, flat bright colour and stippled dotwork shadow beneath the dog give it a playful, graphic look on the calf.

Pull that stool in nearer the range, for the wind has gone round to the north and it finds every crack in this kitchen. You'll want to hear about the winter the snow sat on the top gate for six weeks, and Dai Pugh's ewes went up the mountain and didn't come down again.

Nobody would go after them. The drifts stood higher than the hedges and the lane was a white wall. But the dog did. Tegid was a short-legged corgi with a red collar and a round brass tag that rang when he trotted, and he wore a gold headband his mistress had won at Carrow Fair for the best-kept cart pony. He wore it everywhere, and nobody ever told him to take it off.

He went up the bank with his tongue lolling out, as if the whole thing were a picnic. Along each fence post he found the old bunting Dai had strung up in summer, flags cut in triangles, teal and purple and a hot pink that had faded to almost nothing. He followed them one after another through the blizzard, the way a child follows a line of sweets, until he came to the gap in the wall where the ewes stood bunched and bleating. He sat down in front of them, ears up, and barked each one through the gap and down the hill until the last of them was home by lamplight.

Dai never found those flags again. Come spring he went looking and the posts were bare. But on the first clear night of the new year, if you stand at the top gate, you can still hear a brass tag ringing somewhere up in the dark, and a small dog's bark sending the sheep on home.
