Country Strong script on a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a foot resting on a wooden floor, with the words Country Strong written in flowing cursive script across the arch. The linework is thin and even, in a single dark ink with no shading or fill. The soft grey fabric at the top edge of the frame and the wooden floor boards sit around the tattoo, which is the clear focus of the composition.

Dear Ada, the supply boat came in on Tuesday with the tinned peaches and the news that you have gone off to the county fair with that fiddler. I said nothing to Mother, though she asked me three times over the tea things. You always did leave the kettle on for other people.

The light has been dim since the equinox gales. Mr Penhallow, who keeps the other half of this rock, took the lamp apart on newspaper last week, and we have been climbing the stairs by the lantern like mice in a cellar. He says the mantle is cracked. I say it is only tired, same as the rest of us, and a tired thing still has work to do. Father painted those words on the signal board by the landing, COUNTRY STRONG in red, so the boats from the south could read them off the water. It was his joke and his creed in one.

Last night the swell came over the lower wall and I stood at the rail with the spare paraffin, thinking about those peaches of all things, and how you would have laughed at me for hoarding them. Then the beam caught the spray and threw a pale band across the water, and I could see the mackerel boat rolling home with her riding lamp lit. This morning I went down the ladder with the board and your old blue ink and redid the letters, tongue between my teeth like you used to.

Come home when the fair is done. Bring the fiddler if he can keep time. The board wants a second coat, and I am not climbing that ladder alone. Your loving sister, Nell.
