Crescent moon and star with enjoy life script
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A crescent moon with stippled, cratered shading sits on the forearm, with a small outlined five-pointed star inside its curve and small dots scattered around it. The words enjoy life are written in a loose cursive script above the moon. The tattoo is in black ink with grey shading on the moon, set against plain skin with a soft, slightly dim background.

The moon over Pellow Hill had been cracked since the spring the miller's boy threw a stone at it, and by August the cracks had filled with dust from the old quarry, so that on clear nights it looked like a face someone had pressed into wet clay and then forgotten. Nobody in Thrale thought much of it. They had the chapel roof to mend and the bridge to argue about.

Mrs Idris Coyle kept a shop on Mill Lane that sold thread, buttons and paraffin, and she was the only one who climbed the hill with a ladder and a pot of lamp black. She painted the moon's shadowed side in small careful dots, the way her husband had shaded engravings for the parish almanac before the war took the use of his hands. Every dot, she said, was a crater the moon could no longer hold against her. A star she set inside the curve, because the moon had always looked lonely without something to look at.
The vicar's wife came up in October to complain that the thing could be seen from the bus stop. Mrs Coyle said it had been seen from the bus stop for three hundred years and only now had anyone troubled to notice it had a face. The vicar's wife went home without an answer. The next evening the lamp in the shop window burned until dawn, and the dots on the hill came out one by one, the way stars do when a town finally stops arguing and looks up.
