A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming down on Coldharbour market since before the bells, and by noon the fishmonger's awning sagged like a wet sail. Hester Vane wiped her hands on her apron and watched the boy from the ropemakers' row stand over her tub of red eels. They came up the estuary only once a year, and they coiled in the water like something knotted by a sailor in a hurry.

He wanted one. His father had gone out on the Tessel tide three nights back and had not come in, and the boy was certain a red eel laid across the bow would bring him home. Hester had heard that tale before. Every year somebody believed it. She told him the eels were not for sale, only for trade, and that the price was whatever he could carry that weighed more than coin.

He thought about it while the rain ran off his nose. Then he unwound the spare line from his shoulder, the only thing he owned that had been his father's, and laid it on the slab. Hester lifted an eel from the tub with two fingers, coiled it once around his wrist, and handed the line back with a knot already tied in the end.

He went down to the harbour with the eel warm against his skin and the tide turning under him. He rowed out with the line in his fist and did not stop until the lantern on the Tessel bar showed a boat riding low and steady. Hester said later that it took guts to row toward the dark, and that the river had never asked for anything smaller.
