Pink cupcake tattoo with purple bow
Other · Colour · Photo
A cupcake with swirled pink frosting, a pink heart on top and small star sprinkles, sitting in a grey striped wrapper tied with a purple bow. The cupcake has solid outlines and soft shading, with pale blue star shapes and sprinkle dashes scattered around it. Bright pink and purple ink dominate the design, with grey and black used for the wrapper.

The frosting had started to slide before the tray even reached the church hall, so Marguerite Pike did what thirty years of Saturday baking had taught her: she piped a fresh swirl over the sag, pressed a sugar heart into the peak and hoped Dilys Hanbury from the Women's Institute would be too busy with the raffle to look.

Dilys looked. She lifted a cake from its grey striped paper, turned it under the strip lights and announced that the purple bow was too fussy for a bake sale. Marguerite had tied it that morning with ribbon left over from her niece's christening. She said so, loudly enough that the tombola queue turned round, and Dilys sniffed and went back to her urn.
By four o'clock the tray was bare except for one cake, the one with the heart on top. A boy of about seven stood in front of it for a full minute, two pound coins sweating in his fist, while his gran tried to hurry him along. Marguerite kept her mouth shut and tidied the empty doilies, because she had never once in her life made a cake for anybody who was watching them choose.
Then the boy marched past the till, straight over to the urn, and held the cupcake up to Dilys with both hands. "You can have it," he said. "It looks like it's sorry."
Dilys took it. She peeled back the stripes, very slowly, and ate the heart first.
