Cupcake with diamond and bow
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A cupcake with swirled pink frosting, small red hearts and blue specks sits under a blue faceted diamond. The wrapper is yellow with black spots and is tied with a large red bow. Bold dark outlines and smooth shading give the piece a cartoon-like, saturated look against pale skin.

The ring was meant to go inside the cupcake, not on top of it, and Nell had told Dougie so twice before the van doors went up on Saturday morning. Hettie Marsh had lent her grandmother's diamond for the reception, a stone so faceted it threw light across the church hall, and the plan was simple. Hide the ring in the sponge of one cake, tie the box with red ribbon, and let the best man do the rest.

Dougie had other ideas. By nine he had set the diamond on the frosting of the top cake, nestled between the pink swirls like a cherry, because, he said, nobody ever hunts for a cherry. Nell pressed a red heart of icing beside it and said nothing. The leopard-print cases were already crimped, and the bow on the box was tied so tight that the ribbon sang when she tugged it.
The guests arrived in a hot crush of hats and sandals. Hettie's father found the stone first, halfway through the buffet, and held it up to the light like a prize at the village fair. Nell watched him turn toward her with the face of a man about to be very cross, then he bit into the cake, laughed until he coughed, and kept the diamond pinched between two fingers the whole time.
Hettie's father wiped the icing from his chin and tucked the stone into Nell's apron pocket. Nell tied the last cupcake's bow, slid it into the box for the bride's mother, and decided the ring had been found by the right person after all.
