Cupcake tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small cupcake is tattooed on the inner wrist or forearm, drawn with a clean black outline. The frosting is filled in with soft orange and pink, and the paper case has yellow stripes. The photograph is softly focused, with blurred yellow and red objects in the background.

Mrs Okonedo had been stirring the same bowl of buttercream since six, and by eight the frosting had gone the colour of a Blackpool sunset, which was not what she had ordered for the school fete. "Peach," she said again, tapping the order card on the counter. "Not marmalade."

Dilys had been baking for the church hall since she was nine and had never once been told her frosting looked like marmalade. She wiped her hands on a tea towel printed with lighthouses and said nothing. Instead she took a fresh spoon of pink from the tub, folded in one drop of yellow from the bottle with the cracked label, and piped a swirl so tight it held its shape on the cooling rack like a small, stubborn cloud.
The cases were the real problem. The shop had run out of plain white ones, so she had lined the tins with striped yellow paper left over from the summer raffle, the kind that looks like deckchairs. Mrs Okonedo sniffed, bit into one at the counter, and went quiet for a long moment.
"Well," she said at last, chewing. "Marmalade, my foot."
Outside, the wind shoved rain against the glass, and the radio on the windowsill slid from the shipping forecast into a brass band playing badly. Dilys boxed the last twelve, tied the string, and wrote the price on the lid in pencil, the way her gran always had, because pencil could be rubbed out. Mrs Okonedo took the box, tucked it under her arm, and paused in the doorway. "Same again Thursday," she said. "And if you ever run out of white cases, don't tell me."
