Cupcake with bow and stars
Traditional · Colour · Photo
A cupcake sits at the centre with swirled pink frosting, a purple bow tied on top and small yellow stars pressed into the icing. Blue four-point sparkles flank the cupcake, and a small orange fruit with a green leaf sits in the lower right. Bold black outlines, flat fills and light shading on the wrapper and bow give it a classic, cartoonish look.

Mrs Abernethy had never once in forty years let anyone else pipe the frosting on the Saturday cakes, and she was not about to start with the Harvest Fair looming. So when her nephew Dev arrived with flour on his trainers and a crooked bow of lilac ribbon in his pocket, she handed him the piping bag and told him to mind the stars.

He made a mess of the first six. The pink swirls leaned like drunk bell towers and the yellow stars came out lopsided, one looking more like a sneeze than a star. Mrs Abernethy said nothing, which was worse than shouting. On the seventh he stopped trying to be neat and simply followed the curl of the cream the way you follow a kite string, up and over and back down, and when he pressed the last star into place it sat exactly where it belonged.
The judges at the fair were a pair of retired vicars who preferred sponge. They tasted the cupcake, frowned, then tasted it again. "It's wearing a bow," one of them said, as if this were a crime. Dev tied it on top with the lilac ribbon, and the other vicar laughed so hard he had to sit down on the hay bale behind him.
Mrs Abernethy took the rosette home and pinned it above the oven, where it still hangs beside the calendar from the chip shop and a clementine going soft on the windowsill. Dev never did learn to pipe straight, but every Saturday after that he got the stars.
