Curiosity did not kill this cat lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a three-line slogan, Curiosity did not kill this cat, drawn in bold black brush-style capitals on a plain white background. Each line is slanted upward and separated by a thin, tapered black underline that tapers at the ends. The linework is solid black with no shading or greys, and the composition is centred and fills most of the frame.

Nell found the tom cat asleep in the coal bunker at half five, curled on the lid of the tin where her father kept his snap. He had no business being there. Every other cat in Tyn-y-Coed had the sense to stay out of the colliery yard, but this one had come in through the gap in the fence the way he came in through everything, nose first and tail up.

'Get out of that, you daft article,' she said, though she was already reaching for him. Her mam had the kettle on in the back kitchen and the wireless was giving the football. Dad would be up the lift in twenty minutes, black to the eyes and wanting his tea. The cat watched her with yellow eyes and did not move. Then he stood, stretched, and walked straight past her towards the cage where the men stepped on each morning.
She followed him, of course. Everybody in the village said she was too nosy for her own good, and the schoolmaster had written it on her report in red ink. Inside the hut by the pithead the lamps hung in a row like sleeping bats. Under the old board Mr Pryce had painted years ago, the one that read LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP, someone had chalked a grinning face. The cat jumped onto the bench. Nell looked at the board, then at the cage, and felt the old itch under her ribs.
She did not go down. She stood at the rail and watched the cage swallow the first shift into the dark, and the cat wound round her ankles, purring as if he had made the decision for her. 'Curiosity,' she told him, 'is a different thing from being daft.' He blinked at her. She carried him home under her coat, and the kettle was still singing when they came through the door.
