Darkwing Duck tattoo on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon superhero Darkwing Duck standing with one hand on his hip, wearing a dark fedora, a purple jacket with yellow buttons and a flowing dark cape. The outlines are bold and dark, with smooth shading on the jacket, cape and feathers. Bright colours of purple, pink-red, yellow and blue fill the design against a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pritchard said the Night Drake had nicked her husband's bicycle, and by Tuesday dinner the whole of Fenwick Cross had a view on it. I was twelve and sold the Evening Courier outside the Co-op, so I heard every theory before the grown-ups settled on one. Nobody had actually seen him take anything. They had only seen the cape, a flap of pillar-box red going round the corner of Bridge Street like a warning flag, and the brim of that black fedora pulled low over his eyes.

Dad reckoned the Drake was a publicity stunt cooked up by the feed merchant, but Dad reckoned a lot of things. I thought about it on the walk home along the canal, counting the gold buttons on a purple coat in my head, four down the front, the way you count stairs in the dark. On the towpath I found the bicycle lying in the reeds with its bell still trembling, and a single white feather tucked into the spokes like a calling card.

I didn't take it to the police. I wheeled it up to Mrs Pritchard's door and knocked, and when she opened it I held out the bicycle in one hand and the feather in the other. She looked at the feather for a long time. Then she said the Drake had always been a show-off, and shut the door, and I stood on the step with my empty satchel feeling I'd been handed a secret I hadn't asked for and wasn't allowed to tell.
