Dear Diary, Tuesday. Frost on the water trough so thick Dad had to take the axe to it again. I have decided the costume is working. Nobody on the farm has looked twice at me since Gran's raccoon suit came out of the church jumble box, hood up, striped tail dragging through the muck behind me like a flag. Mr Hollis the postman waved and said nothing, which I count as a win.

Today's mission was the hen house. Mum says the Brahmas have stopped laying since the cold came, and Dad says it is the fox, but raccoons know things. So I crept along the stone wall, cupped one hand to my ear the way the wildlife man on telly does, and listened hard at the coop door.

Mostly I heard Dorothy complaining about her feet. Then Mrs Pell came up the lane calling for her dog and told Mum the eggs were disappearing from her coop too, and she would bet her last shilling it was a raccoon. I nearly gave myself away right there by the gate. I am now officially a suspect.

So I stepped out to clear my name, hood down and very dignified. Dorothy took one look at the wellies poking out under all that grey fur and clucked, "Raccoons don't wear wellies, you daft article." Mum laughed so hard she had to sit on the mounting block. Tomorrow I am going to be a fox.
