Deathly Hallows symbol on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of the Deathly Hallows symbol sits on the inner wrist, shown as a black triangle with a circle inside and a vertical line through the centre. The linework is clean and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The photograph is taken against a dark background with a blue knitted sleeve covering the lower forearm.

Dear Frank,

The Pavilion has put the band back on the sprung floor, and the whole hall still smells of Brylcreem and wet coats. I sat under the third chandelier, where you always sat, and counted the water stains on the ceiling the way you taught me: three for the bandstand, one for the door that never shuts. Mr Okonedo has chalked a fresh mark on the cloakroom hatch. The girls say it's for luck, though nobody will tell me whose idea it was.
Your brother came in with his trumpet case and asked after you. He said the ferry leaves Tuesday and that you'd promised to be home before the tide turned. I told him what you said the night before you went, that three things belong together only while each one is carried by someone who means to bring it back. He laughed the way you do, then stopped halfway through, and bought me a lemonade I didn't want.
I went up to the hatch after the last waltz and drew it again, the way you showed me on the back of the ticket stub: a triangle, a circle sitting inside it, and one straight line running down through the middle to tie them. It looked smaller than I remembered. The band was packing up, and the caretaker was humming something nobody had played all evening.
Come up the hall when you're back. Don't say anything. Just stand where the chalk is and I'll know it's you.
