Diamond tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A diamond outline drawn in black lines sits on the inner forearm, with the facets divided by straight strokes. Soft blue wash shading sits behind and within the outline, fading into the skin at the edges. The arm rests on a red fabric with a cream floral pattern, with the hand relaxed and the nails painted pale mint.

The night porter at St Edith's kept a diamond in his coat pocket, though it was only a lump of cut glass he had bought from a Hastings market stall for a shilling. He had bought it the winter his wife went up to the surgical wing and did not come down the way they had hoped. Nobody on the wards asked what it was for. They only noticed that he touched it when the corridor lights buzzed.

On the third floor there was a girl of nine who could not sleep for the noise of the machines. Each night she asked the porter what the sea looked like at the bottom of the lift shaft. He told her it was blue as a cut stone, and that every edge of it took the light and sent it back in lines. She asked to hold the stone. He said no, then yes, and put it in her palm, and she lifted it so the corridor lamp broke into small rooms of light across the ceiling.
In the morning the stone was back in his pocket and the girl was asleep on her side, her hand open on the blanket. The nurses said she had slept until breakfast. The porter said nothing about it, but after that he set a glass of water on the sill each night for whoever was awake, and the ward grew used to light falling where the dark used to sit. By the time the sky went blue over the car park, the ceiling had its own small rooms, and nobody on the night shift wanted them taken down.
