Diamond with pine trees and galaxy sky

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A diamond outline is filled with a dense row of black pine tree silhouettes along its lower half. The upper section shows a night sky in purple, pink and teal, with small white stars and dark dots tracing the top edge. The soft gradient shading contrasts with the solid black trees, and the design sits centred on the forearm against a dark leather backdrop.

So the stone came down in the Calder wood the winter the lamp at Skerryvane failed, and it came down the way a dropped plate does, all at once and in no hurry to be noticed. Hold still, I'm getting to the bit you want. Tam Rennie climbed the hill with a sack because the laird had offered a shilling for anything bright that fell from the sky, and he found it lying in a bed of needles, cut flat on every face and sharp as a broken bottle, with a whole night folded inside it.

He could see the trees in it, black as ink, standing in a row along the bottom, and above them a sky he had never seen over Skerryvane: violet bleeding into rose, a blue-green smudge like breath on glass, and small white points that shifted when he tilted it. He carried it down past the lamp steps. His wife said a thing pinned to the stars would bring bad luck if kept, so he set it on the windowsill to be rid of it come morning.

But the keeper's lamp turned that night as it always did, and the sky in the window took on the stone's colours, and the pines beyond the cottage leaned towards the glass as if they were listening. Tam never did sell it. In the morning the sack lay empty and there was a patch of frost on the sill in the shape of a diamond, and the wood behind the cottage had grown a new row of pines overnight, every one of them tilted out towards the light.

You can go up and look, if you don't believe me. Mind the rocks on the way down.
