Doll with blossoms and yin-yang on a limb

Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo

A doll-like female face with closed eyes and rosy cheeks sits within a red dress-shaped form, decorated with pink blossoms in dark hair and a black and white yin-yang symbol at the centre. Smooth shading and soft gradients model the face and dress, while grey swirls and a purple curved shape wrap around the lower part of the design. The palette is mainly reds, pinks and greys with black outlining, and the design fills the frame against a plain white background.

Your mother will tell you I cried at the station, but I was only hungry, and the man at the buffet had put too much salt on the eggs. Anyway. You are getting married on Saturday and my knees will not manage the church steps, so I am writing this instead, with the good pen you pretended not to notice me hiding in the bread bin.

You remember the painted doll on the windowsill in Pabianicka Street, the one with the black hair piled up and the pink blossoms pinned in it like your grandfather's buttonholes. Aunt Zofia made her the winter before the war, when she had more paint than money. The red dress has a black and white circle at its middle, and she told me it was a bargain between two halves that had agreed to share a waist. I thought that was nonsense when I was seven. I think it is the wisest thing anyone ever painted on a doll.

What I never told you is that the doll opens. Twist her at the middle and she comes apart into a smaller doll, and that one into a smaller still, and inside the last, no bigger than my thumbnail, there was a single blossom folded in a square of tissue paper. Zofia said the smallest thing is always the one that has been kept safe. I carried that little one in my coat across three borders, and it is in the envelope with this letter.

Do not keep it in a drawer. Put it on the table at the reception, where the afternoon light from the window can reach it, and let the guests find the others for themselves. Then go and dance. My knees will complain, but they have earned one bad night.
