Don't fear script lettering design

Lettering · Colour · Flash

A single line of cursive lettering reads don't fear, followed by a small full stop at the right. The strokes are thin and joined, with a long looping tail extending from the left and a tall descender on the f. The lettering is rendered in a metallic gold ink on a plain white background with no body or other elements.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, the ladders are all down now and the Discovery apples are sorted into crates in the cold shed, so the orchard has gone quiet the way it only does after the last pick. Your grandad would have hated the pale patch by the wall where the Bramleys gave out, but I have left it as it is. I thought you might want something to look at when the city gets too loud.

You asked on the phone whether you should take the job in Leeds. I did not answer properly, because I was busy pretending the kettle needed watching. The truth is I think you already know. You have been turning that letter over in your pocket for a fortnight, and it is going soft at the folds. Your mother will tell you it is too far, and she will be right about the trains, but she will not be right about you.

Your grandad had a saying about the fruit on the high branches, that the ones nobody could reach were always the sweetest and the hardest to get. He never climbed the tall tree after his hip went. I used to stand at the bottom with the basket and tell him what I could see, and he would laugh and tell me to be careful on the wet rungs. Don't fear the drop, he used to say, just keep your weight over your feet.

I have pinned the old orchard map above the kitchen table, where you used to do your spellings. Bring it back at Christmas if you like, or leave it where it is. The far corner still gives the best windfalls and nobody else ever goes there.

Love, Nan
