Don't Panic lettering across both feet
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows two bare feet in sandals on a grey pavement, with the hem of shorts visible at the top right. The words Don't and Panic are tattooed in a typewriter-style font, one word on each foot. The lettering is solid black ink and the image is greyscale, with the composition framed from above.

The typewriter in the ticket office at Harrowgate Junction has a sticking e and a capital D that hits low, and by ten past six on the Tuesday the 4.42 has been cancelled twice, so you are typing the third notice with two fingers while the rain comes sideways past the window. You have been trying to obey it all afternoon.

The signal failure has stacked the platforms with people who want to be somewhere else. A woman in a camel coat asks whether the connection to Leeds will wait. A boy with a cricket bag wants to know if the trains have gone funny. You tell him no, only slow, and he nods as if you have confirmed a theory he has been developing since birth. The typed notice goes up under the glass of the board, its letters crooked, the D sitting a hair above the line.
At half past seven the signal man rings through to say the points are free, and the platforms empty in a rush of wet coats and apologies. You are left with the ledger, the cold tea and the sheet of carbon paper still bearing the ghost of your message. Someone has pinned a page of yesterday's paper beside the board, and in the margin, in pencil, a passenger has written it again in careful block capitals, underlined twice, as if it were the only instruction the station had ever needed.
