Fine line script quote on a lower leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A slim, thin-lined black script reads this too shall pass down the outside of a lower leg, running diagonally from the calf towards the ankle. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the skin tone is warm under soft, backlit light. The composition is shallow focus, with the tattoo and sparkly heels in the foreground and pale window frames and a wooden floor behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shoes had been Marguerite's idea, bought from a catalogue she called a dangerous book, and by the third hour of the wedding breakfast in Little Hadley even the church bells sounded tired. Nobody in the Pennington family would say so, but everyone had noticed the glitter heels had gone from gleaming to grey at the toes, and that Aunt Joan had taken to sitting on the bottom stair with her own feet kicked out in front of her like a patient.

The quote on her ankle had been Cecily's doing, the year her husband left for Leeds with a sack of his father's tools. She had sat at the kitchen table with a biro and written it out seven times on the back of a gas bill, crossing out the stroke that looked too much like a question, until she was satisfied. Then she'd gone to a parlour above the bakery on Mill Street and paid in coins she had been saving for a new kettle. Every family member knew the story and nobody ever told it at parties.

At half past four Marguerite found her sitting on the stairs with the heels in her lap and a cup of cold tea beside her. "They rub," Cecily said. "Every single time. I thought I'd be too grand to wear them again and here I am, looking at the rubber on the soles like they owe me money." She rubbed the thin black line above her ankle with her thumb, the way you might check a bruise. "Is it still raining in the car park?"

"It's stopped," said Marguerite.

"Then we'll walk to the car. Barefoot, if we have to. It's about the principle of the thing."
