A small outline of an elephant facing left sits on the middle segment of a finger on a clenched fist. The linework is thin and unshaded, with the body, trunk and legs drawn as single black lines. The boards of the Crown Assembly Rooms in Ashby had been worn to a shine by sixty years of heels, and on a wet Saturday in March they gave off a smell of damp wool and paraffin. Nell Cotter stood by the coat hooks with her arms folded. Her grandmother had told her that a dance hall remembers everyone who never stepped onto its floor, and Nell had never believed a word of it.

The fuse went at ten past nine. In the dark somebody dropped a tray of glasses, and the fiddler began a slow air he could play without light. Then something grey came across the boards, lifting its feet the way an old animal does on ice. It walked left, toward the door and the rain, and stopped under the lamp outside as if it had been waiting all evening for someone to notice it.

Nell followed it into the yard, where the cobbles shone and the water dripped from the gutters. The creature was small and thin-lined, drawn in a single unbroken stroke, and it lifted its trunk towards her hand. She understood it wanted a partner. She slid her grandmother's wedding ring from her finger and laid it across the trunk, and the creature curled its trunk, took the ring, and walked back inside without looking round.

When the lights came up the hall was empty except for Nell and old Tobias Reed, who mended the piano and had never been known to dance. Grey dust lay on the floor in the shape of four small feet. Nell never saw the creature again, but every Saturday after that she came to the hall and danced, and the boards sang beneath her heel as though something heavier was keeping time beside her.
