Dear Marguerite, you will have had my last letter by now, the one with the bus fare and the complaint about the gulls, so I will not repeat myself. The boat is in. Ferris had her hull scraped at last and the new anchor chain rattles like a bag of spoons, but she floats, and Uncle Tom has agreed I can take her out to Skerry on Thursday if the wind stays west.

Something happened on the slip this morning that you would have liked. Mrs Abernethy's grandson was sitting on the bollard with a sketchbook, drawing the ferry crane, and he asked me what I was going to do when the fishing gave out. I told him I did not know. He turned the book round and had written across the top of a page, in letters so big they nearly ran off the edge, EMBRACE THE JOURNEY, with a curl under the E like a wave about to break. He said his teacher had put it on the classroom wall and he thought it was daft, but he copied it anyway because it looked good.
I laughed until I had to sit down on the coil of rope. Then I thought about the summer we rowed out to the lighthouse and the tide turned on us, and you sang the whole way back so I would keep pulling. Nobody had told us then that the journey was the thing. We only knew our arms hurt.
I am going to try for Skerry on Thursday. If the weather turns, I will be back on the Tuesday, and you can scold me properly over tea. Write soon, and tell Mother the geese are not my fault.
Love, Ros
