Est. 1981 lettering on lower back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman seen from behind wears a black bikini top and frayed denim shorts, with the tattoo centred on her lower back. The words Est. 1981 are set in black ink in a plain, upright serif style with solid, even linework and no shading. The background shows other people outdoors in bright daylight, and the tattoo sits as a small, clear focal point in the middle of the frame.

You learn the letters on the Harbour Stores fascia before you learn the tide tables. Mrs Ferrier hands you a tin of black enamel and a sheet of her late husband's pencilled guidelines, and tells you the capitals must sit plain, no curls, because the island has never trusted anything fancy. Est. first, then the stop, then the year. She says the year twice, as though it might drift off if left alone.

The ladder wobbles on the cobbles. Below, gulls argue over a split crisp packet, and a boy in wellies asks whether the shop is older than his nan. You tell him it is, though you can't be sure. The paint takes slowly in the salt air, so you work in short strokes, and each time you dip the brush you think of the ledger in the back room, where 1981 sits in the same upright hand on the first page, a cup ring stained over one corner.
On the last stroke of the 1 the brush slips and a thin tail runs down the board. Your stomach drops. Mrs Ferrier comes out with a tea towel, studies the drip for a long moment, then laughs and says the first year was messy too, that her husband had to repaint it twice. She rubs the drip with her thumb, and the smudge stays, a small grey comma under the numbers.
Next spring you will come back with the same tin. The new coat will go on over the old, and the comma will still show through underneath, faint as a pencil line, and you will leave it there.
