Family script and key on an ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the word Family written in flowing black script, with a line curling down from the final letters to a small key with a heart-shaped bow. The linework is smooth and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. It sits against plain skin on the ankle, with the design filling the centre of the frame.

Third week out of Hull and the swell has finally stopped sliding the salt cellar across the mess table, so you sit with the key in your palm and try to remember which door in Cleethorpes it was meant for. Your mother pressed it into your hand at the bus stop with the wind dragging her hair across her mouth. "Front door," she said. "Lift and push, it's always stuck." Then the bus pulled away, and by March the house had been sold to people you never met.

The bosun laughs when you show him. He is a Hartlepool man with forearms like hawsers and a list of ports inked across his knuckles, and he says every key on a ship is for something that isn't there any more. You know that isn't quite true. The little heart on the bow has worn smooth on one side, where a thumb has rubbed it through a whole childhood of waiting on the step.
Off the Horn the weather turns, and for two days you stand watch in a wet wind that tastes of iron. On the third night the cook's radio finds a Lincolnshire station, a dance band crackling through the static, and you finally write to your sister on the back of a customs declaration. The key is for the door, not the house. Lift and push. Keep the porch light on for us.
