Fawn and peonies on upper back
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A small fawn with spotted grey shading stands beside a pink peony and two smaller red flowers. Green leaves and a thin curling stem frame the group in a loose oval. The linework is delicate and the grey shading is soft, while the flowers use soft pink, red and green ink.

Ruth found the trampled stem first, then the small hoof prints pressed into the wet soil beside the bed, neat as stitches.

She didn't shoo it. She sat on the bench with her tea going cold and watched it pick its way along the path, all knees and caution, its spots fading into the dappled light under the apple tree. It ate a clover head and then looked at her with the flat, unbothered gaze of something that had never been told what a garden was for.
Every morning after that she left a bowl of windfall apples at the gate with a note on the back of a seed catalogue in her own handwriting: take what you need, leave the big ones. The peonies bloomed anyway, two of the three, and the red ones at the edge went to seed in the sun.
In August the fawn was gone, and she found herself at the gate at dawn, bowl in hand, calling its name to the empty lane. Then she heard a stick crack in the hedge and turned, and it was standing there with a sprig of green stem hanging from its mouth, looking at her as if she were the one who had strayed.
