Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two forearms are shown side by side, each with a script word in blue ink: Fearless on the upper forearm and Hope on the lower one. A teal ribbon is wrapped through or beside each word, with soft shading in the lettering and ribbon. The photo is taken close up against a dark background, with the two tattoos filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dolly Pryce had been chasing the right teal for three weeks, and the dye vat behind the Waltzer tent kept giving her a blue that looked like a bruise or a green that looked like pond water. Her father, who had run the Star Wheel for twenty-six years, said the shade came from the mordant and not from her temper, which was the kind of thing he said when he meant the opposite.

The fair was moving to Shelford Green on Sunday, and the rosettes for the children's pony show had to be finished before the lorries came. Each one needed a ribbon with a word printed across it, and the show committee wanted words that meant something. Dolly had written a list on the back of an old ticket book: Brave, Kind, Steady, Fearless. Her brother Ray, who was nine and fearless about most things, had wanted Biggest. She crossed out everything except Hope, which he had written at the bottom in capitals, and she decided it was the best of the lot.

On the last night she lowered the final length of satin into the vat and lifted it out, and the colour came up like a swimming pool at dusk. She laid it on the trestle under the lamp and stitched the word in silver thread, letter by letter, while the generator coughed and the carousel music wound down across the field. Ray fell asleep on the costume trunk with his shoes still on.

In the morning the ribbon went on a grey pony called Maisie, who had never won anything and tossed her head so the rosette swung like a bell. Dolly watched from the rail as the judge held it up to the light, read the word twice, and pinned it to the gate for everyone to see. Ray squinted at the silver letters and said they looked like they were running off. Dolly told him that was the whole point.
