The rain has been coming down since six, and by eleven the gutters of the covered market are running like they mean it. You stand under the awning of the lettering stall with a brush in your teeth, because your hands are full of paper and the paper keeps trying to blow away. Mrs Okafor from the fishmonger's across the way shouts that you should have taken the sign down. You shout back that the sign is the only thing in this market that's staying put.

The sign is for her nephew's cafe, a board he wants in brush script, a word he picked from a list on his phone. He read the options out loud and you chose the one that sounded like a dare. You load the brush with ink, thick as treacle, and pull the first stroke down the page with the slowness your old teacher beat into you: press, hold, lift. The f comes out heavy, its tail swinging down like a rope someone has dropped off a pier. The rest should run lighter, quick across the paper, the joins barely touching.

Halfway through the l the power flickers and the lamp above you dies, and for a second there is only grey light and the drum of water on canvas. You don't stop. Your hand knows the shape the way a swimmer knows the cold. When the lamp hums back on, the last s is finished, and it is better than it would have been in daylight, because you were not thinking about it at all.

Mrs Okafor comes over with a paper cup of tea and studies the word for a long time. 'Fearless,' she reads, frowning. 'He's going to walk into that cafe every morning and read that?' You tell her he's going to need it. She laughs, the rain keeps on, and you start clearing the brushes.
