Fearless script on the top of a foot

Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of a foot in a white ballet flat with the word fearless tattooed in thin, flowing cursive on the top of the foot. The linework is fine and even, with a small heart drawn at the end of the word. The ink is a dark plum or purple tone, set against pale skin and a grey pavement background.

Mrs Abney's bench was never tidy after nine, and Ivy Dunmore liked it that way. Under the lamp she laid out the white satin flats the Harrogate company had ordered, their knotted vamps still soft from the last fitting, and smoothed each strap with her thumb as if she could press the nerves out of the leather.

The company opened on Friday. Ivy had stitched the pair over a fortnight, after the shop shut, with the wireless murmuring about rain over the Pennines. Her dad used to say dancers buy shoes the way other people buy courage, one size too small and hoping for the best. At half past eleven she threaded a needle with her teeth and thought about the letter in her coat pocket, unopened since Tuesday, from a cousin in Halifax who wrote in pencil and never finished a sentence.

She opened it at last. The cousin was coming to Leeds on the Saturday train with a suitcase and no plan, and wanted to know if the spare room still had its door. Ivy read it twice, then took a scrap of order slip and wrote back in the thin, looping hand her mother had taught her, each letter joined to the next as if none of them dared stand alone.

She left the reply propped against the lamp where the morning light would find it first. At the bottom, after her name, she drew a small heart and pressed hard enough to dent the card.
