Feather and birds on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A brown feather with visible shaft and barbs runs down the forearm, with a loose trail of small bird silhouettes leading away from its base toward the wrist. The motifs are filled in solid with a flat brown tone and soft edges, with no outlines or shading. The photo is taken outdoors on a pale grey pavement, with the wrist and forearm filling most of the frame.

The birds come in off the water in the second week of October, always on the turn of the tide, and you learn to tell them apart by how they fall. Thrushes drop like thrown gloves. Starlings never fall at all, they pour. The ones that strike the lantern glass you sweep from the gallery before breakfast, and Mr Ferrier, who kept this light before you, logged each one by species and hour, as if they were men coming home from a war.

This year there is a girl from the mainland, Nell Acheson, who came out on the supply boat for the paraffin and stayed for the weather. She finds a feather on the iron stairs, long and brown, with its barbs still combed flat, and lays it on the sill beside the log. By morning there is a second feather, and a trail of small dark prints across the damp boards, leading from the sill to the door, as though something small had walked out of the room and kept its feet.
You follow the marks down the spiral and out onto the rock. They end at the edge of the landing, where the swell is breaking white, and you understand that they were never heading for the sea. Nell has been drawing birds on the back of the tide tables all week. She says they go wherever the light tells them to, and that she would rather be lost following it than sit still in a room with the lamp turned off.
You write her name in the log that night, under the last bird, in the column meant for the hour.
