The gulls had gone inland again, so Mairi knew the herring were close. She carried the last basket of mackerel up the slip and found her grandmother at the net shed, mending a torn bag with a bone needle. Nine feathers lay on the bench beside her, the ones the wind had blown off the boats that week, and the old woman was sorting them by colour as if they were coins.

It lifted off the water and turned three times in the grey air before the tide carried it north, and she rowed home with the nets empty and her heart oddly light.
