A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferret got into Ward Nine at ten past three, which is the hour when nothing good happens, and I was the only one awake to notice. Mrs Okafor in bed four had been asking for her glasses since midnight, and I had just found them in the sluice, folded beside a bedpan, when I heard claws scrabbling under the linen trolley. Gilbert. Nobody on nights owned him. He belonged to Dennis on the porters' desk, who swore on his mother's life that the cage was latched.

I knelt on the lino with a digestive in my fingers and tried to look unthreatening, which at that hour is harder than it sounds. Gilbert came out slowly, all black velvet and bad intentions, and then he did something I didn't expect. He wound his long body round in a single loop, nose tucked under his tail, and held himself there, a dark curl with one bright bead of an eye, as if he were posing for a card that somebody had forgotten to send. I laughed so loudly that Mrs Okafor called out from bed four asking whether it was a fire.

Dennis arrived at half five, grey in the face, and found his ferret sitting on my clipboard eating the biscuit with great dignity. He scooped him up and Gilbert went straight into the crook of his arm as though it had been built for him. Mrs Okafor had her glasses on by then and was watching us over the top of them. "Well," she said, "that's the most exciting thing that's happened on this ward since Easter." I wrote it on the handover sheet under her name, because it seemed unfair to leave it out.
