Fine line bow tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a bow with two looped tails sits on the side of a finger. The thin, even black linework has no shading, and the warm, vintage-toned photo is mostly beige and skin tones with a blue nail in the foreground. The close crop centres the tattoo with the neighbouring fingers curled around it.

The ring cushion has come unpicked at one corner, and the vicar's wife is already counting down the minutes to the service. You kneel on the vestry carpet with a reel of ivory satin and the nail scissors Aunt Maureen swore by. The bow must be perfect by half past two, because the photographer has promised to shoot the cushion from above, and nobody wants a lopsided loop on the record.

Your fingers know the knot before your head does. Loop, cross, tuck, pull. Maureen used to tie your school shoelaces this way while the kettle sang, insisting a bow was only two rabbits arguing over who goes down the hole first. You fold the tails into two even loops and pin them with a single seed pearl. Through the wall the organ starts a hymn far too slowly, and somebody laughs at it.

Halfway through, the bride's brother wanders in, asks if you're all right, and you hold the cushion up so he can see. He says it looks like it was tied by someone who meant it. You don't tell him the pearl came off Maureen's wedding dress in 1971, or that she would have hated the fuss.

When you carry the cushion down the aisle, the little bow catches the light from the high window, and for one step you forget to be nervous. The rings sit in the centre, held as neatly as a parcel you wrapped yourself, and you feel the knot hold.
