Fine line house tattoos

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The left photo shows a fine line drawing of a two-storey house with a side extension, a chimney, and paned windows, set on a horizon line on the ankle. The right photo shows a simple, hand-drawn style cottage with a arched door and a bordered roof, above a crossed branch with round berries. Both use black linework with no shading or colour, and each design is centred on a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rowan came down the week before the wedding, two lengths of it cut from the hedge behind Mrs Pritchard's gate, and I bound them crossways with garden wire because Dorothy said a wreath should look like it had been argued into shape. The berries were still hard and green at the tips. By Saturday they'd be red, she said, and the whole village would know which house was theirs.

I had hung that door myself in March. Oak, arched at the top, with a heart cut into the centre panel so small you had to put your thumb on it to find it. Tom had wanted a plain board. Dorothy had won, the way she won most things, by saying nothing until he gave up. The cottage behind it was only three rooms and a lean-to, the sort of place my father would have called a shed with ambition, but the chimney drew, which is more than most can say.

On the morning of the wedding I climbed the stepladder with the wreath in my teeth and the wire in my pocket. The door was already open, propped with a brick, and Dorothy stood in the gap in her good coat, looking up at the lintel as if she expected it to say something. I fixed the branches to the nail, stepped down, and she didn't go in. She just put her palm flat on the heart in the wood and kept it there, and I went to find Tom, who would need telling the ring was in the wrong pocket again.
