God Blessed script on an ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a woman's ankle and foot in a red high-heeled shoe, with her hand resting on her leg above. A small tattoo of the words God Blessed is written in a thin, cursive script in black or dark grey ink on the ankle. The background is a light tiled floor and the image is cropped tightly around the tattoo and the shoe.

The sign-writer came onto Haddow Common the week the big wheel lost a bolt and half the stalls were still arguing about whose fault it was. He carried a tin of gold size, three sable brushes wrapped in oilcloth, and a reputation for never once painting a word backwards.

Mrs Pennock was waiting at the steps of her green caravan with a folded paper in her hand. She wanted two words, and she wanted them thin. "Not your show-card capitals," she said. "Something a body has to lean in to read." He told her thin letters need a steady hand and a dry morning, and she told him she had brought the morning with her. It rained all afternoon anyway, so he painted the words on a square of tin instead and left them drying under the awning while the lamps came on along the midway.
On the last night she asked him to put them small on the lid of her tin, the one she kept her papers in, where only she would ever see them. When he asked why not on the door, where the neighbours could read it, she said a blessing shouted on a door is for the neighbours, and one written small is for the person who carries it.
At first light the wagons rolled out. He found the tin on the caravan step with the lid propped open, the gold still tacky, and beside it a shilling and a red thread tied in a bow. He never saw her again. He kept the brush with the split tip, the one he uses now on anything he means to last.
