Fine line triquetra knot on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin, single-weight black outline of a triquetra style knot, with three interlocking arcs and a small looped element rising from the top. The linework is clean and even, and the design is rendered without shading. The photograph is taken straight on against a black background, with the tattoo centred on pale skin.

Nobody on the quay at Porthkerris could tie a knot the way Old Mags Trewin could, and she never once wrote one down. She sat on an upturned pot with a net across her knees and her fingers moving as if she was counting beads, and the boats came in around her without anyone telling them where to moor.

The winter the Sabrina went missing, I was seventeen and mending nets for my keep. Mags handed me the needle and said the trick was three loops that never let go of each other, one over, one under, one through the middle, with no end showing. 'Find the end and you've lost the knot,' she said. I didn't believe her. I tied a dozen wrong ones that week and she picked out every one with her teeth.
When the Sabrina came back in March, four men and a torn mainsail, Mags was already at the slipway with a length of tarred cord. She tied a small loop at the top, the sort you'd use to hang a lamp, and pushed it into my palm. 'That's for whoever's out on the water,' she said. 'The rest is just the three of them holding on.'
I still have that cord in my tin of hooks. The loop has worn smooth from my thumb, and every time I tie the knot I leave the top open, so there's always a way in.
