Fingerprint heart tattoo on the wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A heart shape made of concentric fingerprint ridges sits on the inner wrist, with two swirl centres side by side forming the lobes of the heart. The linework is fine and dense, and the ink is solid black with no colour. The collage shows a close view, a wider view and a hand held palm up with dark glitter nail polish.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ink tin had dried to a crust, so I licked my thumb, rubbed it on the pad and pressed it hard, because Mr Hollis would not order a new tin until the Christmas stationery was paid for. Eddie Lowe stood at the counter with his cap in both hands, waiting to press his own thumb beside mine on the back of a delivery slip. The fair had come to Market Deeping that week, and the woman in the caravan had told us our marks were the same kind of map, and we ought to make something of them before the ink wore off.

We made a heart. It took eleven attempts. His whorl sat a little left of centre and wanted to spin outward, while mine was tight as a clock spring, so the two curls met at the point like a pair of knots tied by people who did not quite agree. Eddie laughed and said the heart looked more like a sheep's lung. I told him it looked like a heart that had been through the wash. We pressed the final one onto the slip, blew on it, and watched the grey lines settle into something that looked almost deliberate.

He went to Malaya in the spring with the national service call-up, and I kept the slip in the till drawer under the penny rolls. Letters came with a foreign stamp and a thumbprint in the corner of every third one, a rough smudge he said was the ink from a borrowed pad, which made me laugh in the empty shop.

The last letter came in October, and the thumb in its corner had been pressed twice, once firmly and once a little off, so that two swirls sat side by side. I took the slip from the drawer and held it against the envelope under the lamp. They matched well enough to keep me up all night.
