Fish outline behind the ear
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A single black fish outline sits behind the ear, with a curved tail and a small eye marked by a few inner lines. The linework is smooth and of even weight, and the design is in solid black ink on pale skin. The ear and dark hair fill the right and left edges, leaving the tattoo as the clear focal point.

It was a plain grey thing, no longer than my palm, and it had been there long enough to go stiff at the gills. I should have left it. Instead I wet my hands, cupped it, and carried it up the spiral stair with both palms open in front of me, the way you carry a candle in a draught. Halfway up, one flick of the tail against my wrist told me it was not quite finished with living.
Richard met me in the bailey with a clipboard and a face like a shut gate. 'You can't keep pets in the cistern, Nell. It's a hazard.' I said nothing. I had already decided. That night, when the surveyor's car had gone and the castle sat black against the hill, I climbed down again and let the fish slide from my hands into the water. It hung there a moment, unsure, then turned once and was gone into the dark.
By morning the cistern was just a cistern again, a square of stone holding the sky. But when I looked down, there was a faint ring spreading out from the middle, and I stood there a long while until it had quite gone.
