Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the kettle. That was the winter the Hallam ewes wouldn't lamb and the wind got into the byre and set up house. Old Mrs Pendry kept a tin under the dresser with nothing in it but a brass button and a ball of twine, and when the snow came she'd take them out and set them on the table in a ring, the button in the middle, the twine looped round like a wheel.

Her husband Tom had gone up to the top field to mend the wall before the thaw that never came, and by four o'clock the light was gone. She took the lantern and walked the wall by feel. Every few yards a stone had tumbled, and every time she found one she set it back and stopped, the way you stop mid-sentence when the next word is still coming. Five gaps, five stops, and between each stop the wall ran on, sound and unbroken underneath. She didn't hurry. A pause is not an ending, she used to tell the children, only a place where two things keep hold of each other.

At the fifth gap the lantern caught a shape in the snow: Tom, sitting against the wall with his cap in his lap, looking up as if he'd been waiting for someone to ask him the time. 'You're late,' she said. 'I was thinking,' said Tom. 'Thinking takes its time.' She sat down beside him and they watched the stars come out one after another, each one a small stop in the dark.

Next morning she pressed the five marks into the frost around the byre door, the way you'd mark out a field for ploughing, and the ewes came down to them one by one, and not one of them was late.
