Infinity paw print with love script on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black tattoo shows an infinity symbol with a solid paw print sitting inside the upper left loop, and the word love written in cursive along the lower stroke. The linework is thin and even, with the paw print filled in solid black. The ink is shown on pale skin against a dark background, with the design centred on the wrist.

The abbot wanted the prints swept from the cloister path before Vespers. Tansy had walked across the new lime mortar of the north wall again, a grey collie with one ear that would not stand up, and her four toes and pad had set in the wet as neatly as a seal in wax. "A dog is not a sin, Brother Anselm," he said, "but neither is her mess a relic." I said nothing, because I had already decided to leave them.

Nobody at the priory had claimed her. She had come up the valley road in October with a length of blue baler twine knotted to her collar, the end frayed, and she had sat down at the lodge gate and refused to go in until Brother Hugh gave her bread. Each evening since, she has walked out to the lane's bend, turned, come back, and lain down where the gatekeeper's bench meets the wall. Out and back, out and back, the same loop every time, as if she were tracing a figure on the ground for someone to read.

On the Thursday I took a stick of charcoal from the kiln shed and drew that shape on the lintel of the gate: a loop, a crossing, a second loop. Beside it I wrote, in my crooked hand, the word the shepherd used to call her across the fields, which Hugh had heard from the farm boy. Love. It looked like nothing much. The abbot read it at Lauds and said nothing at all.

Spring came. The lime cured hard and pale, the prints stayed where they were, and Tansy's loop kept wearing its path through the rue and thyme, out to the bend and back, until the brothers stopped stepping round it and began to walk it themselves.
