Radial comma design on the upper thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows six solid black comma shapes arranged in a rotating pattern around a small central dot. The edges are crisp and the ink is an even, dense black with no shading. The design sits on a tanned thigh photographed at an angle against a bed and a teal cover, with a patterned crocheted top and denim shorts partly visible.

The rain has been coming sideways across the market since seven, and you have been pretending the leaking awning over your trestle is not your problem. Your uncle's letterpress tray sits under a tarpaulin, forty years of lead type sorted by hand, and the box marked PUNCTUATION has rusted at one corner. Nobody buys type on a wet Thursday. Nobody buys anything but chips and phone cases.

Then a man in a yellow cagoule lifts the lid and tips it, and six commas slide out onto the wood, tails curled the same way, as if they had been turning in a slow circle in the dark and had only just noticed the air. He asks what they cost. You say a pound each, and he laughs and says they look like they want to be somewhere else. You set a dot in the middle of the table because there is nowhere better to put it, and the commas settle around it like a wheel that has forgotten its road.
Your uncle always said a comma is a breath, not a stop. That is why they could never leave a sentence without a pause, and why they kept turning back. You watch the man read the faded label, rain drumming on the awning, and the commas lean toward him, into the gap where he might have said something. He buys all six for a pound and the dot for nothing, then walks off between the stalls with the wet grey shapes in his coat pocket.
By closing you have a tin of coins and one full stop nobody wants. You sweep the water off the boards, slide the tray back into its box, and find the empty space in the PUNCTUATION compartment still turning, just slightly, as the rain eases off.
