Nobody had told the vicar about the dog. Bramble, a grey lurcher with one torn ear, had attached himself to the wedding party the way he attached himself to everything, by leaning. Ruth had asked me to hold his lead during the photographs at the lych gate, since I was the only one who had not been given a job with a speech attached.

The lead was a faded red thing with a brass clip, and it kept going slack in my hand while Dan and Priya laughed at something the photographer said. Bramble kept looking back at the gate where the road curled down toward the river. He had a way of waiting that made you feel rude for not waiting too. I said as much to Ruth's grandmother, who was sitting on a bench in a hat the colour of custard, and she told me he had waited like that for her husband every evening for eleven years, at the same spot on the same wall, until the stone was worn smooth where his paws had gone.

Then she said, "Give him here," and took the lead. She didn't hold it tight. She let the dog walk three slow steps toward the river and stop, and he looked at her as if she had spoken his name in a language only he knew. Then he came back and pressed his head under her hand.

When the photographs were done I found a loop of white ribbon on the bench where she had been sitting, tied in a figure eight, with a note tucked beneath it in pencil: Keep going round.
