Ring of semicolons on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo sits on the outer thigh of a person lying down. Five comma-shaped marks, each with a dot below, curve outwards from a small central dot to form a radial, flower-like pattern. The ink is solid black with smooth, even edges and no shading, and the tattoo is centred in a casual, close-up photo taken indoors.

Grandad painted every sign on the Hallowell Fair by hand, and he never once bought a stencil. The Starlight Whirl had five arms that swung out from a brass hub, and on each arm he had painted a comma with a dot tucked beneath it, which he insisted on calling semicolons because his own father had told him that was what they were. Nobody on the fairground argued with him. You did not argue with a man who could letter a gold leaf halo around the bearded lady in one afternoon.

I was nine the summer the hub cracked. We were in a field outside Ashford, the generator coughing, and the ride would not turn past a lurch. Grandad sat on an upturned crate with his tin of ochre and said nothing for a long time. Then he asked me to fetch the spanner from the van, and while I was gone he climbed the scaffold and sat in the middle of the wheel, right where the dot would be, with his boots dangling over the drop.
When I got back he was whistling. He told me a semicolon is the mark for when a sentence is not finished but needs to take a breath, and that the arms of a fair ride are the same. They only go round so far before they come back to the start. I held the spanner up to him. He did not take it.
The Whirl turned that evening for the first time in a week, and it turned slowly, the way a sentence does when you read it aloud to someone who is nearly asleep.
