Old Tamsin Reeve had walked the edge of Hollin Wood every winter since the mere took her husband, and in forty years the frost had shown her nothing but fox and deer. This morning it showed a small bare foot pressed clean into the white at the stile. The toes were spread wide, as if the walker had been running, and the trail turned away from the village and in among the birches.

She followed it with her lantern held low. Each print was a little deeper than the last, heel and sole and five neat toes, though the frost stayed hard and the ground beneath it did not give. At the edge of a clearing she found a girl of four or five sitting on a stump, her feet blue with cold, picking at a crust of bread. The girl looked up without surprise. "I'm waiting for my mother," she said. "She said I was her whole world, so she'll come back for me."

Tamsin knelt in the snow and asked where the mother had gone. The girl pointed at the birches, then at the village, then at the sky, and laughed as though the answer was obvious. Tamsin wrapped her own shawl around the thin shoulders and lifted her. The child weighed no more than a bundle of kindling, and they walked back along the prints with the lantern swinging.

At the stile a woman stood in the lane with no shoes on, her feet bruised red and her face wet. She took the child without a word. Tamsin looked down and saw that the small prints ended exactly where the woman's began, as though the two of them had been walking toward the same doorway all along.
