Your mum asked me to write this down rather than stand up at the reception and make a fool of myself with the microphone, so here it is in pencil, because your grandad always said ink was for people who never change their minds. Ruskin the collie came to us the spring after the funeral, a scruffy thing with one ear up and one down, and for eleven years he walked the cliff path to Hollin Point every morning at six, whatever the weather. He never once let anyone go on ahead alone.

The day of the wedding, the lane was flooded and the car wouldn't start. Your Uncle Dev, who has never in his life been early for anything, turned up at my door at quarter to seven with a torch and a pair of wellies two sizes too big. We went the long way round by the field edge, him in front, me holding onto the back of his coat, and the mud kept trying to keep my shoes. Every few yards he stopped and waited, and every few yards I told him to go on, love, I'll catch you up. He said Ruskin would have had his hide.

We reached the church with grass stains to the knee and both of us laughing too hard to speak. I think that was when I understood what your grandad meant by the old saying on the back of the dog's collar, the one nobody could ever quite read because it was worn away. Keep hold of each other on the rough ground. Nobody has to walk alone, not even when the path goes under water.
